The sheer amount of belongings one has today has much exceeded what our predecessors had. Blame it on increased disposable income, or post-COVID revenge shopping, or simple greed. There’s where the wardrobe comes in.

A well-designed wardrobe, whether a vanity area or almirahs, can be a game changer in your home. It serves as a focal point and can elevate the aesthetics of the entire space. Additionally, using lighting to highlight the vanity area and its contents can add glamour to your wardrobe. Finally, selecting premium-quality materials for your wardrobe, such as brass and steel, can make them stand out while ensuring their durability. So here’s how you do it.

Getting the structure right

Building the perfect wardrobe in your house involves careful planning and organisation. Consider your lifestyle, daily routines, and the type of clothing and accessories you own. Determine how much space you require for hanging clothes, folded items, shoes, accessories, and any additional storage needs.

Select a suitable location in your house for the wardrobe. It could be a dedicated room, a walk-in closet, or even a section of a larger room. Ensure the space has sufficient room for the wardrobe and easy accessibility. “Take accurate measurements of the available space to ensure your wardrobe will fit perfectly. Note the dimensions of the walls, ceiling height, and any architectural elements like windows or doors that may affect the design. Decide on the storage features you need. Consider incorporating hanging rods, shelves, drawers, shoe racks, jewellery organisers, and other accessories based on your clothing collection and personal preferences. Create a layout plan for your wardrobe. You can use software or online tools to design the layout or simply sketch it out on paper. Allocate space for different categories of clothing, such as shirts, pants, dresses, and accessories. Adequate lighting is essential to showcase your wardrobe and make it easy to find items. Evaluate the lighting options available in the space and install suitable fixtures, such as ceiling lights, LED strips, or task lighting for specific areas like shoe shelves,” advises Nihal Kalra, CEO and Co-founder, The Decor Kart.

When it comes to wardrobes, functionality is most important. So before you create your wardrobe, make sure you have listed all the requirements to customise the inner carcass of your wardrobe accordingly. The perfect wardrobe may not be the most aesthetically appealing but one that meets all the requirements. Hiring a professional or investing in bespoke storage solutions can help achieve an optimal result while reflecting one's unique style.

The market today also has a plethora of options when it comes to customising wardrobe solutions, so make sure you review multiple solutions and choose what works the best for your room and its design. This will also ensure that the wardrobe is integrated into the décor of the bedroom. “Choose a wardrobe design that suits your style and complements the overall aesthetics of your home. Options include built-in closets, free-standing wardrobes, or customised solutions,” mentions Mr. Kalra.

Getting the exterior right

In 2023, some of the newest wardrobe trends include multi-functional and modular wardrobes, smart-storage solutions, and technology integration

Additionally, eco-friendly and sustainable wardrobes that use natural materials and incorporate circular design principles are becoming increasingly popular. “Today the consumer is becoming more aware of the international trends, hence the use of raw materials like European Chipboard has become more acceptable within the community. For the front finishes people are inclined towards leather/ faux leather, wardrobes with transparent or reflective glasses are becoming very popular, there has also been an increase in demand for wooden fluted shutters for the front and as always matt lacquer finishes are the most popular ones amongst the consumers. Bespoke or custom-designed wardrobes that fit the customer's specific requirements and personal style continue to be in demand,” says Dilip Rathi, Managing Director, Etreluxe.

Choose materials that are durable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing. Some materials that are currently trending for building wardrobes are solid wood, plywood, MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), Melamine and glass. Ultimately, the choice of materials will depend on your personal style, budget, and the purpose of the cupboard. It is important to consider the durability, maintenance, and visual appeal of each material before deciding.

“These days the pandora is vast. From wallpapers, to fabric, to PU finish, to veneer polish, all these materials are highly successful. Nowadays people have started to be more experimental with their wardrobes. So, all glass wardrobes are trending, along with full height shutters as opposed to making separate over heads. The most important factor to remember is not all bedrooms can house shutter wardrobes, in that case we should go for slider wardrobes,” say Nishtha Duggal and Rohan Gera, Co-founders and Principal Architects, The Concreate Story.

Organise Right

Your wardrobe offers the two-fold purpose of grooming and aesthetics. You could merge them with your existing décor, or make them stand out like a design element. So create your wardrobe right and keep your mood happy.
