Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Mickey Mouse gears up in a traditional avatar.
September 26, 2023: As a tribute to both tradition and imagination, revered Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee represented India as part of Disney's ‘Create 100’ campaign. He created a mesmerizing masterpiece of Mickey Mouse in ethnic attire to commemorate the century of Disney magic, in association with the Make-A-Wish foundation.
The campaign, which will also see the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Giovanna Engelbert, Beyoncé and more, brings together a diverse array of the globe's most celebrated creative minds, as well as emerging talents in fields such as fashion, music, and art with a noble aim to support the foundation.
The designer’s artwork is as marvelous as the cause behind it. Titled ‘Namaste Mickey,’ this enchanting painting showcases Mickey Mouse adorned in resplendent traditional Indian attire and jewelry, standing gracefully against the backdrop of the iconic Taj Mahal. The scene is further enriched by India's vibrant flora and fauna, creating a breathtaking spectacle that seamlessly blends the mystique of the East with the enchantment of the West.
In the words of the designer, “My creation, known as ‘Namaste Mickey,’ draws inspiration from India’s rich tapestry of traditional and miniature paintings. Crafted by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation, it begins with a digital print on handmade canvas, then adorned with the age-old, intricate embroidery techniques of India.”
While it is conceptualized by the designer himself, the entire work is handpainted by Sabyasachi Art Foundation. The work is embellished with appliqué and collage work, hand-embroidered textiles, and meticulous metal detailing sourced from the Sabyasachi ateliers. Finally, this exquisite piece is elegantly framed using embroidered textiles, showcasing its beauty on a sturdy oak wood frame.
