Enter a Westin hotel and you will notice immediately how good it feels to be here. True to its brand promise of preserving wellness in travel, The Westin Mumbai Garden City comes across as an ‘urban resort’ for two reasons. The location, which is far away, yet in the middle of it all; and the modern-classic interiors that cocoon you no matter why you are there. Checking in on a Sunday, I was one among many in slippers and sunglasses. While the weekend usually brims with families along with their floats and sun hats, the week sees business travellers maneuvering their trolleys and precariously holding their jackets with one finger.
Adapting to the dual purpose of a weekend getaway, as well as a corporate comfort zone, this property is pleasing to all senses. Being in the middle of this dynamic property, I could already find myself planning my next business trip here while vacationing with their Westin weekend package. Always on the cutting edge of innovation in wellness, the property follows a philosophy that I personally think should be adopted the world over - if only it was that easy. The brand globally executes the ‘Pillars of Wellbeing - Sleep Well, Eat Well, Feel Well, Play Well, Move Well and Work Well’. And if you haven’t experienced them, I suggest you pack up and head to the closest Westin property this weekend.
Sleep, eat and love well
The Westin Mumbai Garden City provides inspiring guestrooms and suites that offer every comfort you would need and are designed to let you be at your best. Whether a deluxe category or the presidential suite, each room is warm, comforting and welcoming with all the makings of your perfect home for the night or more. Classic, sleek and easy to move around in with sliding mirrors, perfect closets, a sitting area and 42 inch televisions, I found myself making detailed notes of the design, just in case I redesign my own room. The bathrooms are also grand and match the Westin philosophy of sleep well with its large tub that overlooks your bed (and allows for a comfortable nap in warm water as you destress your nerves and knots - tried and tested!). After a session with their team to learn the secret behind their popular ‘Heavenly Bed Making’, and eight hours of blissful shut eye, I can certainly say that their beds are actually made in heaven. With ten layers of an affair between cotton and wool, I would put this bed in the middle of my room if I could!
Even if here for official reasons, it is my strong recommendation to keep aside an hour for the tub. Besides this, the rooms include all business amenities such as high speed internet access, ergonomic work station and cordless phone with data-port. Located on levels 19 to 32, (yes, do not let the numbers or rather lack of them confuse you in the elevators), I found the floor to ceiling windows energising the room with natural daylight, offering panoramic views of Mumbai. Making you comfortable and very lazy, the room is well stocked with daily newspapers and a DVD player along with an iPod dock to provide the perfect entertainment while in the room, but once outside, the options are endless.
Entertainment must start and end with food. For me, exploring the food options at Westin came as naturally as bees to honey. Heading to the 18th floor, Seasonal Tastes, the multi-cuisine all dining restaurant with an open kitchen, provides interactive dining experiences with a range of international dishes. One of the liveliest places for a lazy Sunday brunch, I was scared that I would hurt one of the tiny tots running around all over the place. Go ahead and enjoy a glass of bubbly as I did, and tempted myself to their famous 'food safari' while scouting for hidden numbers in a quick game of bingo.
Splash is your destination if a lazy drink by the pool is on your agenda. Or Eighteenth, the lounge with signature cocktails and savvy settings, can serve the purpose too. My time at the pool was relaxed and fun as I grooved to the music and sipped on a peach martini that was perfected to the last sip. Watching the sun set, I could feel my body float along the warm water of their jacuzzi - a perfect way to build up my appetite for dinner. Taking a few laps along the length of the pool, I took the opportunity to soak in the marvellous architecture of the hotel as it stood tall adding to the Mumbai skyline.
Highly recommended by the team, my companion and I visited Kangan for a journey through India. With authentic Indian cuisine from the North-West frontier, the Dal Kangan and the kebab platter tantalized our taste buds under Chef Shamsher’s friendly guidance.
A good feeling is always delivered from a good environment. Don't miss the hotel’s Sensory Welcome bundled with smiles and Elixir- flavour infused water, cold wipes and of course, your key to your haven!
Feeling well also comes from the people in and around the property with a warm and hospitable staff that goes out of their way to make things right for you. Smiling faces that ooze confidence and pride in what they do makes you feel like you are all deserving of the pampering and love! The 4th Floor at The Westin Mumbai Garden City is dedicated to sheer well being and takes the form of a ‘Personal Retreat’. The Heavenly Spa by Westin is a sanctuary and I was more than happy to leave myself to the expert guidance of the team. Providing holistic revival, I would personally rate it as one of the best spas in the world. Signature massages and wraps and the unique three stone ritual (love, hope and gratitude) elevates well-being and leaves you with nothing but positivity and peace. For the time bound, they also provide in-room spa treatments who want to experience a spa getaway in the privacy and comfort of their own room.
Move well and play
‘Being Fit’ forms the most quintessential part of Westin’s brand ideology. This property seems to have carefully identified the elements of recreation and fitness in order to help their guests maintain a healthy lifestyle - even on the move! As an excuse to not exercise, I mentioned that I had forgotten to carry my running shoes, but that was waved away as they have a ‘New Balance Gear Lending Program’. Giving the freedom to travel-light, the team introduced me to the program, which means I was allowed to rent work-out gear - New Balance shoes, attire, socks (to take away) for just $5. No excuse to miss your fitness regime, this seems like a brilliant concept that can be adapted at other properties too. For running enthusiasts, the hotel provides a special ‘RunWestin Program’ with assisted running concierge and outdoor RunWestin Maps for two and five kilometre circuits in their Westin Woods. But I passed on this because laziness got the better of me at six in the morning.
The customized Westin Weekends program is designed to ‘make Monday better’. That is exactly what it did for me. An energizing program offering Friday check-in with extended breakfast in-room or Seasonal Tastes, emotional restoration through food therapy at the Sunday Brunch for family and friends, and a late check-out on Sunday, your weekend could not get better!
