French car manufacturer DS enlists the help of atelier Lison de Caunes to bring sustainability to its groundbreaking project
September 30, 2020: Historic French car manufacturer DS has got master of straw marquetry Lison de Caunes on board for their latest design concept, the DS Aero Sport Lounge. Reinventing luxury, DS’ 100% electric concept car with a futuristic design will have its dashboards and backrests made by Lison de Caunes using traditional straw marquetry techniques.
The modern interiors of the DS Aero Sport Lounge will be transformed using the modest rye straw material for stylish car parts. Rye straw, harvested in the same way as it was in the 17th century, is hardly modified and preserves its intrinsic qualities. The natural silica varnish makes it heat resistant and waterproof while giving it a silky finish.
The vehicle's interior perfectly illustrates the neologism "sustainoble", where luxury and respect for the environment blend harmoniously to bring future projects to life.
Ms. de Caunes has revolutionised the technique of straw marquetry and a number of luxury brands have commissioned her to make pieces for their flagship stores: the Guerlain parfumerie on the Champs-Élysées, the Louis Vuitton store on Place Vendôme, the Four Seasons Hotel in New York, and many others. Awarded the title of Maitre D’art in 1996, she is also dedicated to the creation of furniture, objects and wall coverings, either in her own name (Lison de Caunes Créations) or in collaboration with renowned interior architects and designers such as Peter Marino, Hubert le Gall and Vincent Darré.
