Mirari launches new collection inspired by the briolette cut

January 2011: Luxe Indian jewellery brand Mirari has launched its new collection which focuses on a specialized gemstone cut called briolette, which is a drop cut faceted all the way around, like a crystal from a chandelier. It has the unique distinction of being able to move and dangle in a feminine and delicate way, giving flow and movement to the jewellery.

The briolette has an interesting and intriguing history behind it. This gemstone cut traces its origin back to India in the 1600s. Tavernier, during his epic travels to India, returned to Europe with briolette cut gems. The most famous briolette is the ‘Briolette of India’. Historic briolette owners have included Louis IV, Marie Antoinette and Henry Philip Hope. By the late 17th century, the briolette was a passing fancy. Within 50 years, the briolette was an endangered species.

With the arrival of the millennium and renewed appreciation for history, briolette popularity is on the rise. Their subtle beauty is proving to be timeless. Not just diamonds, but all coloured stones, precious or semi-precious, are getting cut in the briolette style.

Fascinated by this delicate cut, Mira Gulati, Founder and Designer, Mirari, has designed a collection of pieces using briolettes. From small bunches to fuller grape like bunches, these briolettes have been used to make flowers, bodies of peacocks, spiral studs chandelier style earrings. An umbrella of stones, including pink, blue, yellow sapphires and multi-colored sapphires have been used in the collection. Citrines and tourmalines of various shades have also been used.
