Jaipur Rugs launches store in Mumbai
February 22, 2019: What started as two-loom business in 1978 is an empire today with a social entrepreneurship model that employs 40,000 weavers across five Indian states. After their first store was launched in Delhi in 2016, the new boutique in Mumbai is Jaipur Rugs’ second flagship store.
The new 4,000 sq ft store is minimalist with a focus on raw natural materials like cement, wood and metal. In keeping with the industrial theme, the store is designed by Mumbai-based interior designer Ravi Vazirani. The boutique also has an experiential chamber and seating space, where customers can design their own rugs and watch a weaver on the loom. The store will also have a gallery viewing of unseen rugs, either one-off exclusive pieces or heirloom pieces owned by the family, at the mezzanine level.
Speaking at the launch, Founder Nand Kishore Chaudhary says, "We are thrilled to finally open in Mumbai. While Jaipur Rugs Company is privileged to have its loyal patrons from the city who regularly shop online, I feel the offline experience will bring clients, old and new, closer to us, and see the brand in a different light. Each rug has a story to tell, and our endeavor has been to bring that narrative from the weaver, to the customer, in the most honest way possible."
The brand’s collections by Head of Design, Kavita Chaudhary, are on display, alongside the award-winning collections such as Project Error and The Unstring Collection series, and Lacuna rugs. One of the prized displays at the store is the recently launched Mysteries of Manchaha, at Maison et Objet in Paris. The series comprises of 85 hand-knotted rugs – in silk, bamboo silk, wool or a combination of these – crafted by their internationally acclaimed weavers. The flagship store will also feature special edition collections with designers such as Gauri Khan, Artemis, Jennifer Adams and Luli Sanchez.
