Fendi Men’s and Women’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection draws inspiration from the universality of family reunions and home
September 26, 2020: Bringing the element of comfort and domestic life, the latest Spring/Summer 2021 collection by Fendi is a reflection of the time spent at home and with family during the quarantine. Designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, the collection is a patchwork of memories.
From the fabric, motifs to the color palette, the collection embodies the quietude and peace of domestic life. Flax linen, cotton, feather, fur and eiderdown quilting are reminiscent of embroidered tablecloths and beddings.
The palette runs from flaxen hues like milky white, light browns, sky blue to more vivid and bolder shades like black and red. Windows – metaphorical and physical – are a leitmotif impressed upon garments in a game of transparency and texture throughout. Boutis satin quilting, linear encrustations of jour d’echelle ladder-work, flourishes of ajouré flowers that expose skin are used to create layers of light and shade.
Formal structures are softened – coat backs and shirt sleeves unbutton, tailored details are ‘debossed’ in trompe l’oeil knitwear, and embroidered housecoats and flared tunics elevate the comforts of home. Lightness and depth intermingle in faded flora print linens and latticework furs, or the intricate workmanship of apron dresses in silk duchesse, embroidered tulle and gazar.
Fendi’s Spring Summer 2021 accessories play with construction and embellishment to conceal and reveal. Embroidered silk veils floats over Baguette and Peekaboo bags while woven texture pervades the accessories assortment through market baskets in recycled PVC, stretch lattice frame totes, picnic baskets and canvas luggage.
Celebrating Italian craftsmanship, the ‘hand in hand’ Baguette project is a unique collaboration with local artisans across Italy, including the Abruzzo and Marche regions shown on the runway. Laser-cut and ajouré apron belts hold the second iteration of the FENDI X CHAOS ‘tech jewellery’ capsule collection dipped in pastel colours, and chain drop earrings feature pearls and pairs of cheeky Fendi dice.
On foot for Women – woven boots, elastic pumps, and rattan pool slides evoke a tonal spring elegance. For Men – sling-back boat shoes and T-bar plimsolls are new twisted classics.
The collection was unveiled in an intimate fashion show where the setting evoked domestic and traditional Italian inspirations. An airy scenography composed of fresh white curtains was complemented by the white sofas from the Fall Winter 2020-21 Women’s show set. Digital ‘windows’ were projected across walls and floors showing glimpses of nature - from garden flora, passing birds and the setting sun. Continuing the personal narrative of the Fendi Family, the show casting included a selection of related models: mothers, fathers, sisters and sons featuring Edie and Olympia Campbell, Cecilia and Lucas Chancellor, and Philippe and Dries Haseldonckx.
