PANGAIA has joined forces with SeaTrees to help reverse climate change — by restoring, planting and protecting coastal ecosystems
April 28, 2020: On the occasion of Earth Day, PANGAIA has joined forces with SeaTrees to help reverse climate change — by restoring, planting and protecting coastal ecosystems which store CO2 most efficiently and effectively. Mangrove forests are 5x more effective at storing carbon compared to tropical forests.
PANGAIA’s Mangrove Tree Planting System
For each product sold, PANGAIA plants 1 mangrove tree with SeaTrees on the customer’s behalf. One mangrove tree stores up to 1 ton of CO2.
Sea Trees
SeaTrees is the first blue-carbon, ocean focused platform taking action on the climate crisis by planting and protecting SeaTrees* in coastal ecosystems. This project directly enables the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), designed to transform our world for good by 2030.
What is Blue Carbon?
Blue carbon is the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. SeaTrees focuses carbon on the coast — mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses. For example, over 95% of the carbon in seagrass meadows is stored in the soils (Blue Carbon Initiative).
PANGAIA x Sea Trees
PANGAIA is currently focusing on mangrove planting in Biak Island, Indonesia. This project restores and protects 1,000 hectares of highly degraded mangrove forest. It employs local villagers to plant a diverse mix of mangrove species, creating both jobs, healthy ecosystems and habitats. Biak Island’s mangrove estuaries are also 75% deforested, which is why this type of restoration seems extremely necessary.
