At the dawn of a new year when most of us were still trying hard to hold on to the holiday and celebratory period, the world of fashion has had no rest. Marking the first fashion week of 2020, London Men’s Fashion Week Fall/Winter 20-21 had their runways swooned with groundbreaking designs and creatives focussing on blurring the gender norms, unisex trends, cultural references, rich maximalism and artistic mentions. Keeping up with the athleisure style, most of the looks screamed about dapper trends, highlighting luxe streetwear and being the ‘modern chic dude’.

Here are 9 fresh trends, straight from London Men’s runway, to look out for in Autumn/Winter ’20.

1. Check-mate

Checks are runways’ forever favourite. Men can be seen embracing this trend and both fashion shows and streets are the perfect place of inspiration for styling them. Edward Crutchley, Pronounce, Band of Outsiders, Charles Jeffrey presented looks that should put this trend on your checklist. Martine Rose’s ensemble of ‘stripes and checks’ together speaks of a disruptive statement. It’s time men start taking the business of adorning checks as their true mate.

2. Restoring Denim

Taking denim out of the trend equations would be a sin. Having been a staple garment fabric for decades, reimagining denim in innovative ways year after year has become imperative. The London runway is bringing creative distinction to this mass-chosen trend - Studio ALCH and Ahluwalia have done the necessary to keep denim on the block. Bianca Saunders’ sharp nuances here makes a standout.

3. Redefining Formals

The ultimate London wardrobe mainstay is always sleek-chic yet serious formals. There are always occasions that call for slipping into something more luxurious and confident than the outfits for the rest of the year. This year, London manifested a whole new definition of wearing formals - suits that shout your cool and calm personality yet throws light to your responsible self. John Lawrence Sullivan, E Tautz, Bianca Saunders surely have redefined formal wear with oversized coats and silhouettes.

4. Exaggerated Detailing

The game of details is not a simple one. The art of elevating one’s outfit by using various detailing techniques is the first attribute that draws one to one’s wearable. Monumental and oversized buttons, contrasting piped seams, big motifs stood as major trend moments in London FW. The highly acclaimed ‘print on print’ has always been a friend of the summers but having them for the fall season is an innovative trend. Abstract prints, artistic references, holographic, psychedelic, patchworks made way for a trendy and sassy style statement.

5. High-Notched

“The higher the neckline, the better” - this has always been a good motto to follow in womenswear, in order to exude a sophisticated style. Fashion is ever-evolving. Blurring the gender rules and bringing the chic styles of ‘she’ to ‘he’, the runways do not disappoint at all. Turtlenecks, high-necklined jackets and overcoats - these avant-garde silhouettes spontaneously throw a supreme, affluent-looking aesthete. High-collared men’s fashion is a bona fide trend and its time men stock their closets with these aristocratic styles.

7. Vividly Yours

As Miranda Priestly exclaimed, “Florals for summer, how groundbreaking!”, she would surely find men acing up their colour palette groundbreaking. Wearing bright tones is the new cool - be it being adorned in flashy hues in bits or in a wholesome monochrome ensemble. Men’s outfit combinations don’t always have to be boring muted tones. Bethany Williams showcased a bright and bold mash of primary colours; Band of Outsiders contrasted vibrant hues with neutral ones; and John Laurence Sullivan’s monochrome collection is a guide to wearing radiant hues.

8. Oversized Affairs

With the fashion pendulum swinging back, the oversized trend continues to resonate with the hip-hop culture and athleisure aesthetics. Chunky hoodies, billowing suits, slouchy blazers, overly bulked overcoats, deconstructed functional wear are some statement garments to be triumphed onto. Bethany Williams, Nicholas Daley makes this trend work. Wearing oversized yet looking sharp and tailored is the correct manner to stand out.
