A first in auctions' history: Sotheby's to offer complete set of Picasso silver plates
May 3, 2016: In a world’s first, Sotheby’s will auction a set of 24 silver plates by Pablo Picasso at its Boundless: Contemporary Art auction in Hong Kong.
Estimated at $1.55 – 2.33 million, the silver plates were designed by Picasso and famed silversmith, Francois Hugo and executed by the latter and his son, Pierre Hugo in the mid-20th century. The Sotheby’s sale is the first opportunity ever for discerning collectors to acquire the whole set, as all 20 editions of each plate have been sold out for years.
Comprising a single lot, the set exemplifies Picasso’s free and innovative style, coalescing around three distinct themes: modernist artist, Henri Matisse, Picasso’s second wife and muse, Jacqueline Roque as well as bullfights. Highly stylistic, geometric and abstract, most of the plates span around 15 inches in diameter.
Sotheby’s Boundless: Contemporary Art is to take place on June 23, following a week-long exhibition at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery.
